Reznor: Radiohead offering was insincere, industry is inept

Bookmarked via Diigo on Friday, March 14, 2008 @ 10:40 CDT by Daniel Andrlik

Trent Reznor weighs in on new music distribution and indicates that he doesn’t think Radiohead went far enough in their offering, particularly that their download offering ceased once the album was released in stores.

That last point does bother me a bit, and I really liked the way Reznor released his latest album. There’s definately room for discussion that I’ll probably separate out into a proper blog post.

Nine Inch Nails Releases Album Via BitTorrent - ReadWriteWeb

Yet another major artist rejects the traditional business model and takes a more “new media” path. Trent Reznor indicated he would follow Radiohead’s example, but now he has actually done it.

Very cool. If the labels don’t come to their senses soon, maybe at least the artists will. :-D

Download Uproar: Record Industry Goes After Personal Use - washingtonpost.com

Now the RIAA is filing suit for people making “unauthorized copies” of their music, by which they mean ripping a legally purchased CD to mp3 for personal use. Don’t let the Jammie Thomas photo fool you, the aspect of the suit the article is talking about does not involve her and does not involve file sharing, but rather the thing that millions of people do with their CDs every day. The RIAA has said in the past that this type of use (I really don’t know how this could be anything but fair use, but I’m not a lawyer) is okay, however of late they have been making threatening noises at the practice of making copies for personal use. Apparently, now the RIAA intends to charge ahead and see if they can push this issue in the courts. I can’t see them winning this point, but stupider things have come out of the courts before, and I have little faith in the state of copyright law in this country.

Radiohead - In Rainbows - Digital Pricing Plan - Music - New York Times

Bookmarked via Diigo on Thursday, October 11, 2007 @ 09:06 CDT by Daniel Andrlik

This is mostly rehashing all the other articles that have been published on this, but I particularly like this bit:

Mr. Edge summed up the pricing pandemonium simply: ‘Digital technology has reintroduced the age of the troubadour. You are worth what people are prepared to give you in the digital age because they can get it for nothing.’”

Survey says: only DRM-free music is worth paying for

Bookmarked via Diigo on Sunday, August 5, 2007 @ 23:51 CDT by Daniel Andrlik

This is bad news for the RIAA. Consumers are waking up to the problems inherent with DRM, and hopefully by voting with their wallets they can help shift the tide away from the crippling user experience of DRM.

It’s about time. $1.29 per track is a little expensive, but apparently the price per album will not change.

NPR : Band Tries to Make It Big Without Going Broke

Bookmarked via Diigo on Thursday, February 1, 2007 @ 17:55 CST by Daniel Andrlik

The Dresden Dolls make about $1500 per month after touring expenses. It goes to show how corrupt the music industry is. Sure, they are getting exposure, and if they hit it big before the industry collapses they’ll be in for a lot of money. But seriously, independent songwriters like Jonathon Coulten take home more money per month, even if he doesn’t have the lucrative licensing deals (yet).
