Don’t Call It A Podcast

Bookmarked via Diigo on Saturday, November 3, 2007 @ 18:51 CDT by Daniel Andrlik

This is an older post from Leo Laporte that I like. This isn’t his “netcast” assertion again, rather he argues that by continuing to use the term “podcast” is tying the show to the distribution medium in a way that is confusing for audiences. Really the term is probably here to say, but it might be worth considering whether tying your personal brand to a distribution method, rather than focusing on your journalism/entertainment is doing you a service in the long run.

I don’t actually know the answer to that question, but it is food for thought.

TWiT: A Cast By Any Other Name

Bookmarked via Diigo on Sunday, September 24, 2006 @ 17:02 CDT by Daniel Andrlik

Leo Laporte makes a smart argument for changing the name “podcast” to something like “netcast” which doesn’t introduce the confusing connotations with the iPod. This may be an especially important thing to do in light of Apple’s recent claims that the term “podcast ready” is a violation of their trademark.

Honestly, if the ‘casting community had taken a moment to look forward they could have avoided this whole mess. It will be even harder to change the terminology now. Although, this also gives them an advantage, as its prolific use will make it difficult to continue actively pursuing this tactic.

In a roundabout way, Apple claims that using the word “pod” infringes on their trademark for the “iPod”. This could be bad for podcasting.
