NASA Expanding Tests of Star Wars-Inspired “Droids”

Bookmarked via Diigo on Sunday, August 22, 2010 @ 09:10 CDT by Daniel Andrlik

NASA , in cooperation with DARPA, has been designing little robots for use in space. These robots are designed to be able to conduct synchronized flight with each other, in order to conduct a variety of tasks in space, such as emergency repairs, that previously would have required an astronaut.

From the article:

Known officially as Synchronized Position, Hold, Engage and Reorient Experimental Satellites, or SPHERES, the droids have been on the station since 2006. Astronauts have conducted more than 20 experiment sessions with them, and are on tap to conduct many more. Each SPHERES droid is self-contained with power, propulsion, computing and navigation equipment. Together, they are testing techniques that could lead to advancements in automated dockings, satellite servicing, spacecraft assembly and emergency repairs.

snip…

Miller says that, when his team designed the SPHERES droids, all of their uses couldn’t be imagined up front. So, they built an “expansion port:” into each droid where additional sensors and appendages can be added, such as cameras and wireless power transfer systems.

It looks like they are being tested inside the International Space Station right now, but eventually they plan to move to tests outside in space. Very cool stuff.

Don’t talk to aliens, warns Stephen Hawking

Bookmarked via Diigo on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 @ 08:06 CDT by Daniel Andrlik

Stephen Hawking has completed a documentary in which he explores the possibility of alien life, concluding that it almost certainly exists, and that we should avoid contact with them at all costs.

[Hawking] suggests that aliens might simply raid Earth for its resources and then move on: “We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet. I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach.”

He concludes that trying to make contact with alien races is “a little too risky”. He said: “If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.”

I will most certainly seeking this documentary out when it is released.

Warren Ellis: On space travel

Bookmarked via Diigo on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 @ 08:08 CDT by Daniel Andrlik

This is a great Wired article by Warren Ellis on the current state of space travel and sums up my feelings as well. Some gems from the article:

The single simplest reason why human space flight is necessary is this, stated as plainly as possible: keeping all your breeding pairs in one place is a retarded way to run a species.

[snip]

Exploration has always been central to the human drive. Not because of population pressure, nor trade necessity, but because it’s in our essential nature to wonder what and where is next. We are unique in the biosphere as creatures of imagination.

However, the best bit in this article for me was the following observation, which hit me like a kick in the teeth:

In my life I’ve seen a species go from believing it will live in space to accepting, all too easily, that it will die on the same old dirt its ancestors rot in. Having a nice robot phone is not an acceptable substitute for a future.

Amen to that. Go read the whole article.

Earth’s atmosphere came from outer space, scientists find

Bookmarked via Diigo on Sunday, December 13, 2009 @ 08:43 CST by Daniel Andrlik

Research conducted by scientists from the University of Manchester and the University of Houston suggests that contrary to the current view that our atmosphere and oceans came from the release of volcanic gases may be incorrect. Instead they suggest that the the source of our early atmosphere came from space itself.

From the article:

We found a clear meteorite signature in volcanic gases,” said Dr Greg Holland the project’s lead scientist.

From that we now know that the volcanic gases could not have contributed in any significant way to the Earth’s atmosphere.

Therefore the atmosphere and oceans must have come from somewhere else, possibly from a late bombardment of gas and water rich materials similar to comets.

What I’m curious about is if this makes the particular life sustaining qualities of our atmosphere more or unless likely to be present on other planets.

Making Babies in Space May Be Harder Than It Sounds | Wired Science | Wired.com

Bookmarked via Diigo on Thursday, August 27, 2009 @ 08:54 CDT by Daniel Andrlik

This Wired article documents an interesting experiment to test the effect of zero gravity on embryo fertilization and development, but the methodology seems flawed to me, primarily because they are testing it on Earth:

To test these effects, the researchers artificially fertilized mouse eggs with sperm that had been stored inside a three-dimensional clinostat, a machine that mimics weightlessness by rotating objects in such a way that the effects of gravity are spread in every direction.

The same results may hold true in space, but we really need to be doing these experiments in orbit before drawing a conclusion.

Astronauts test sex in space - but did the earth move? | Science | The Guardian

Bookmarked via Diigo on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 @ 09:14 CST by Daniel Andrlik

US and Russian astronauts have had sex in space for separate research programmes on how human beings might survive years in orbit, according to a book published yesterday. ”

Well, we do need to know about it. It is kind of funny that discussing the research is such a taboo.

Dark matter stars may have lit the early universe

Bookmarked via Diigo on Friday, November 30, 2007 @ 09:57 CST by Daniel Andrlik

I’m a sucker for any story on dark matter. We don’t even know for sure if it actually exists, but it’s such a cool concept.

Space Dust is Alive, and It’s Us

Bookmarked via Diigo on Friday, August 17, 2007 @ 21:36 CDT by Daniel Andrlik

Apparently, space dust can organize into helical shapes and begin to display some of the attributes of life. It’s interesting as yet another question of how did life start on earth. Seems plausible, but I’m withholding judgment until more research is done.

AN EXTRAORDINARY “hyperspace” engine that could make interstellar space travel a reality by flying into other dimensions is being investigated by the United States government. The hypothetical device, which has been outlined in principle but is based…” I’ve bookmarked stuff on this before, but now they are saying that if the theory withstands scrutiny that they could test a prototype engine as soon as five years from now.

FTL travel, here we come!
