Assorted Geekery

Seriously, this is ridiculous. It was cute at first getting the occasional spammer. I even took some delight in moderating their comments as spam and banishing them to the WordPress netherworld, but it is starting to get a little time consuming.

I have been going in cycles with my blogging and have been in a downturn of late. I actually am working on a few interesting entries for you folks, but I’ve just been so damn busy and distracted.

I just discovered via Boing Boing that Google has added a Creative Commons License field (labeled as “Usage Rights”) to their advanced search capabilities. This means you can search for material available under Creative Commons, even by which rights the license offers.

I found this little animation through Boing Boing. It is a little music video based off of the game Zero Wing sung to the tune of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. It gets a little tedious in the middle, but it is still pretty cute.

I just got back from the midnight showing of Serenity, and it kicked my ass. I really really enjoyed it. I was a bit worried going into it, and I hope that the emotional impact of the film is as significant for those who haven’t seen the series, but I think it turned into a great sci-fi flick.

For those of you sci-fi fans who may have been living in a cave, the movie Serenity comes out this Friday. As I am sure you know, this film is based off of the wonderful, if short-lived television series Firefly.

I’ve been listening to the soundtrack to Jade Empire the last couple days. Yes, I am a huge nerd and actually bought the musical score of a video game. But you have to understand: it’s that good.

I finally solved a small but annoying little problem I was encountering with my domain email. You see, my ISP (evil, evil) does not let me open connections to SMTP servers outside of a certain predefined range, which my domain is beyond.

If you haven’t figured it out yet, I am a huge dork. There was a time in my life where I could have quoted the entirety of the movie Real Genius to you on demand.

A short little clip from the upcoming movie Serenity has been leaked onto the Internet. It is certainly not a spoiler of any kind, but is definately “creepifying”. I am now even more weirded out by River than I was before.

Well, I am finally starting to understand the way Linux works, and I am getting better and better at using and navigating it every day. This is really good, because although my friends and coworkers have this image of me as some kind of computer guru, I have secretly known that I am really just a retarded man-child among computer geeks.

Okay, I should have been in bed a couple hours ago, but I stayed up to try out a new Linux installation. SuSE 9.3 rocks my socks off. Not only does it support my sound card (a problem I had with other distros), I can even access ALL the files on my Windows partion from here without booting over to the other side!

Well, I have finally started writing the DDL to build the database that the diplomacy server will run on. For a while there I was getting pretty down on myself for putting it off for so long, but as I began creating the tables I realized that all that time I spent just thinking about it has been priceless in the development process.

Last night before bed I listened to the most recent episode of Dragon Page Wingin’ It, which I highly recommend that you go download and listen to. It’s chock full of hilarity, and plenty of sweet geeky goodness.

A follow up on the now legendary Leeroy. Now you can buy shirts to show support for the misguided efforts of this hapless gamer. Here is what it looks like.

While I was reading over Boing Boing today, I came across this little blurb about about a group of model airplane hackers who have constructed replicas of Star Wars space ships that actually fly!

Oh my God! Total fanboy moment! They have just posted the trailer for the film version of V for Vendetta, based off of the classic graphic novel by Alan Moore. I am so freaking excited now it’s ridiculous.

I am such a nerd for being excited about this. This site is hosted by the fine gentlemen at Logjamming, which also happens to be the same company that hosts Wil Wheaton DOT Net.

Hmm… I am liking this new look. It is still just a WordPress template, but I’ve made a few little modifications to it and written a few extra functions for WordPress to use in order to facilitate the process.

Whew! I have finally moved all of my Blogger entries and loaded them onto the MySQL server. It took many hours of tedious copy and paste work, but I think it is worth it to bring all that stuff with me to my new home.
